Exploring STEM subjects with your child

    JonesBy JonesJune 22, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

When it comes to school and learning, students will find that their academic curriculum consists of more subjects than they can count on their fingers. Whilst each subject is created to ensure students establish a foundation in each area of learning, which helps them develop skills and discover their talents and interests, STEM subjects are something that will always turn heads. STEM, also known as science, technology, engineering and maths, have become so important in a world that is rapidly advancing, meaning that teachers in schools are now placing heavy emphasis and attention on them to ensure students have a strong base laid, in order to reach success in the future. As a parent, you hold the unique opportunity to nurture your child’s interest in these areas of learning, and help them pave the way for future success. By exploring STEM subjects with your child, you can foster curiosity, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities. Here is some advice from this private school in Surrey, on exploring STEM subjects with your child.

    Encourage curiosity

When you dig really deep, you end up realising that curiosity is actually the foundation of STEM exploration. At home, you can help to nurture your child’s natural curiosity by asking them open-ended questions and encouraging them to explore their surroundings as much as possible. Plan a few activities where you take them on nature walks, visit museums, and engage in hands on experiments together. Be sure to encourage them to ask as many questions as they want and to find the answers that they seek in a sensible way. By fostering their curiosity, you help them lay the groundwork for a lifelong love of learning and exploration in different areas of STEM learning.

    Private Tuition

Private tuition, also known as one-on-one instruction, offers personalized educational support outside of traditional classroom settings. It involves a dedicated tutor providing individualized attention to a student, addressing their unique learning needs. Private tuition can help students grasp difficult concepts, improve their grades, and build confidence in their academic abilities. It is often sought for subjects where students may struggle or require additional guidance. With flexible scheduling and tailored teaching methods, private tuition caters to each student’s pace and learning style, ultimately enhancing their educational experience and promoting academic success.

    Hands on experiments

As mentioned very briefly above, try and engage in hands-on experiments together. This is because they are a fantastic way to engage your child in STEM subjects. Begin by setting up simple experiments at home, using simple items that can be found in your kitchen cupboards. For example, create a volcano eruption using baking soda and white vinegar, or, build a simple circuit with batteries and wires. Don’t be afraid to reach out of your own comfort zone too, as it is all a learning process. Don’t forget to engage in experiments that involve observation, measurement, and analysis. These activities not only make learning interactive, but also help your child to develop essential skills such as critical thinking and problem solving.

    STEM kits

There are many STEM based toys and kits on the market, that offer an excellent opportunity for hands on exploration. This is a great option for those parents who feel anxious setting up their own activities and experiments to explore at home. building blocks, coding games and robotics kits, can be both educational and enjoyable tasks to offer your child to complete. keep an eye out for toys that encourage problem solving, creativity, and logical thinking. Popular toys such as Lego sets and magnetic building blocks are great options. These toys provide your child with the tools needed to engage in open-ended play, and develop STEM skills in a fun and interactive way.  Buoc Chan Lang Tham Nguyen Si Kha • Rainy Day Memories • 2023

    Online resources

The virtual world is amazing for helping students explore STEM subjects from the comfort of their own home. Be sure to take advantage of this great tool by allowing your child to browse educational videos, tutorials and interactive lessons. There are also plenty of games and documentaries that your child can go through in their spare time.

Exploring STEM subjects with your child has never been easier. By encouraging curiosity and practicing different activities at home, you can help foster a passion for STEM subjects in your child.
