3 Things to think about when designing a new product label

    JonesBy JonesMarch 9, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Designing your own product labels can feel a little intimidating. Especially when you do not have any design experience or have an expert on stand-by.

But worry not, we are here to get you started and share the best tips when it comes to designing custom labels.

Below, you will find the three most important tips and tricks to remember when investing in labels and sticker printing services and how to keep your artwork looking sharp all along.

    1. Keep it simple

We cannot preach this enough. You might feel tempted to include a whole host of information when you first draft your labels. That is fine. But as you go along, downsize the elements and graphics you are using.

Consumers only skim your product labels. All you have are a few seconds to impress them. The last thing you want is your labels to be so cluttered that they become difficult to read. Instead, you can wow them with a custom-shaped die cut sticker.

The same applies to the fonts you are using: you want your labels to be easy to read, so avoid using overly complicated fonts. Instead, opt for a sleek and simple option to ensure your text is both effective and attractive.

    2. Use white space

White space is the empty space on a product label. A lot of use are wary of white space. From a designer’s perspective, it might even seem like a waste of money.

But do not fall into that trap. White space can improve the overall look of your product labels. (Oh, and white space does not have to be white. You could also call it empty space).

Some space in between your graphics and text can actually make your labels easier to read and give them a more professional look. There are plenty of brands who do this really well, so get inspired.

    3. Choose the right size

Choosing the right size seems pretty self-explanatory. But we see people ordering the wrong size over and over again, so it is definitely worth mentioning.

You need to make sure that the label is large enough to fit all the necessary information. A 1×1″ label will not do the trick, especially if you have to include nutritional information or instructions.

Measure the space you have available. This way you can avoid your custom labels getting lost on your product or being so big that they swallow your entire packaging.

To be absolutely sure, look at your design at scale to get a better feel for its real dimensions.

And now it is your turn. With these three tips, you are bound to create stunning product labels in record time. Are there any tips we have missed? Then let us know in the comments!
